Parish Communication: Do you Have a Plan?

Parish communication plan requires a person of dedication

Adding a communication director to your staff is becoming necessary and plays a large role for effective parish communication–even if it is part-time. Consider a staff member that is versatile and computer savvy. She can make your job easy. Having a communication plan in place is important too.

More and more parishes are hiring a communication director

Some parishes may afford that luxury while others make due with adding more responsibilities to an existing staff. That responsibility may rest with the bulletin editor or business administrator. If that is the case then time is a commodity and having a bulletin service that saves time is key. It can allow a short-handed staff the time to add, update and communicate electronically.

Identify your parishioners

There is a multitude of ways to communicate. Separate your parishioners into groups and identify which form of communication is most effective.
Example Communication Plan:
Youth Parishoners
• Social Media
• Text Messages
Young Adults
• Social Media
• Text Messages
• Emails
• Bulletin Annoucements
Professionals
• Emails
• Text Messages
• Bulletin Announcements
Ministry Members
• Bulletin Announcements
• Blogs
• Social Media
Texting and social media are the best resources for youth parishioners and young adults. That means when planning weekly announcements for those demographics you should plan to release them on those platforms.

Create a communication plan and stick to it

When all is said and done it boils down to bulletin announcements, texting, emailing, and social media to communicate effectively. Keeping your parishioners informed is a weekly priority that must be taken seriously. It requires time and dedication to a regular schedule. Make it easier for your self by identifying your parishioners and their communication needs. Set deadlines for your bulletin announcements, so the information is collection in time to be printed. Be consistent in the platform you communicate on. Your parishioners will start looking for the announcements in the weekly emails, text, and social media post.
